Tokyo 2009: Toyota hints at sports car future with Subaru-powered FT-86 Concept

Toyota
Later this month at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will finally shown signs of moving back into the sports car arena with its FT-86 Concept.

Details on the compact rear-wheel drive coupe are still slim, but the 2.0-litre boxer engine under the hood says this is the long-rumoured sports machine Toyota will build with Subaru’s help.

A brief press release say the production version will be called the Toyota 86 ("86" is pronounced "hachi roku").

The automaker says the four-seater is highlighted by its compact design, light bodywork and low centre of gravity for “racecar-like handling.”

The FT-86 Concept looks similar to the automaker’s FT-HS Concept from the ’07 Detroit Auto Show. We’d expected the production version to bow in next year.

Awesome and fabulous car model.Superb colour.I like the red colour so much.

This unlikely coupe, borne out of the on-again,off-again, on-again relationship between Toyota and Subaru, nearly got axed twice.Toyota’s effort to connect with a younger demographic through Scion hasn’t fared very well.

Toyota desperately needed excitement and the layout is injected into their products. Toyota's effort to connect with a younger population with Scion is not doing very well (or as well as the expectations of the company). The FT-86 is the attempt by the company for the Toyota brand.

This incredible cut, carried on again, off again, again the relationship between Toyota and Subaru, was closed almost two times. In April 2008, the first ex-CEO of Toyota Katsuaki Watanabe announced the joint development project with Subaru, the two companies would build a sports car based on the same platform.

Its color is superb and every one will like it very much.
What is its cost?
