Pony up: Ford Mustang gets new 305 horsepower V6, host of other improvements for 2011
Ahead of its unveiling at the L.A. Auto Show later this week, Ford has released a load of info on its significantly redone 2011 Mustang V6 model.
Traditionally, the volume-seller over the much-hyped V8 model, the entry-level ‘Stang just got a whole lot more interesting.
It starts with a new, all-aluminum 3.7-litre V6 engine, making 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. It can be mated to new six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The latter improves fuel economy by 25 percent over the 2010 model and delivers best-in-class highway consumption numbers. (The old 4.0L SOHC V6 delivered 210 hp and 240 lb-ft).
The DOHC Duratec engine uses Ford’s Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) technology and now revs to 7,000 rpm. Our enthusiast side is also happy to hear the new V6 wears a cold air induction system and dual exhaust.
“This car marks a new type of Mustang,” said David Pericak, Mustang chief nameplate engineer. “We’re using a high-performance quad-cam V6 with all the bells and whistles… it’s really going to get a lot of new sports coupe fans excited about Mustang, some for the first time ever.”
The 2011 Mustang V6 also gets improved handling via retuned dampers and spring rates, new rear lower control arms and stiffened stabilizer bar bushings. A new Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system eliminates drag on the engine. A limited-slip rear differential is now standard as well as larger four-wheel ABS disc brakes.
A new Performance Package can be had on the 2011 V6 Mustang that will add a 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration, firmer Mustang GT suspension, 19-inch wheels, performance tires, a strut tower brace for increased rigidity and a unique electronic stability control calibration with sport mode.
New technology and features available on the 2011 ‘Stang include a driver’s message center in the instrument cluster, integrated blind-spot mirrors, Ford’s MyKey system, designed to encourage safer teen driving and safety belt use and the latest version of the SYNC multimedia system.

Ford finally has a V6 Mustang that has real performance. Wonder what it'll do with aftermarket parts? He He...
