BMW has taken the wraps off the sixth generation of its midsize 5 Series sport sedan.

Not only does the new ‘5’ now offer the longest wheelbase in its class, it now shares a platform with its big brother, the 7 Series, and is built at the same plant in Dingolfing, Germany.

The new exterior design closely follows the example set by the new 7 Series and the hatchbacked 5 Series Gran Turismo. Of course that kidney-shaped grille and Hofmeister kink at the bottom of the C-pillar are ever-present.

The new BMW 5 Series will launch in June of 2010 (as a 2011 model year). Initially, it will be available as a 535i and 550i. The 528i and xDrive all-wheel drive variants of all three models will arrive later in the year.

The 528i will be more focused on efficiency with a 240-hp inline six under the hood.

The new 5 Series is absolutely brimming with technology. There optional Adaptive Drive, which encompasses Driving Dynamics Control, Electronic Damper Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. BMW says its Integral Active Steering “will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle’s wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.”

P90053753 BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are focused on making the Bimmer more environmentally friendly and includes tech like Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, active cooling air flaps, and on-demand operation of engine accessory drives. The doors, hood, front fenders, and suspension assemblies are made of lightweight aluminum too.

Some might not agree, but this id the best looking BMW 5 Series ever, at least to me.

whaaaaat the funk. that actually looks better than it does on an E92 lol, any more shots of it? the rims look like RS Watanabe's with the stepped lip, and tucking is always nice. i'm going to assume it's on air and not a static drop
