Z06 NEW FOR 2006, EDITORS' CHOICE

The sixth-generation Corvette was a shoo-in for Editors' Choice last year, and with the 505-hp Z06 joining the line for 2006, that choice is even more of a no-brainer.

The regular Corvette remains available in both hatchback coupe (with Targa top) and convertible versions. The standard 6.0-litre V8 LS2 engine, based on GM's Gen IV small-block family, matches the last-generation Z06, generating 400 horsepower, and 400 lb-ft of torque.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and for 2006 the optional automatic is a paddle-shift six-speed, versus last year's conventional four-speed.

In no small way, the Z06 is a tamed-for-the-street evolution of Chevrolet's successful Corvette endurance racers. Its 7.0-litre LS7 engine has a dry-sump oil system, the huge brake rotors are clamped by six-piston front and four- piston rear calipers, and the structure makes liberal use of aluminum (for the frame), magnesium and carbon-fibre. Unlike its predecessor the Z06 has the same hatchback silhouette as the base coupe, but the roof is fixed -- no Targa top.

According to GM, the Z06 is good for 0-100 in less than four seconds. Yet for all the emphasis on performance, it is also a pussycat to drive gently.

Even more incredible all-round performance for the money

Steering feel isn't as good as the old C5's
