Dodge Nitro SE, SXT, SLT, R/T
SUV under $45K
Mar 01, 2007
Dodge is aiming to bring some of its "Grab Life by the Horns," attitude to the midsize SUV segment with its chiseled new hauler, the Nitro. Based on looks alone, it's a winner. Behold the high beltline, wide front fenders and that big crosshair grille.

Dodge's first midsize SUV actually shares its basic platform with the Jeep Liberty, though the suspension -- a coil-spring independent front and five-link, coil-spring rear -- is all new and intended for much more spirited on-road driving than its off-road-friendly cousin.

Inside, the Nitro's interior is handsome and straightforward, with a fold-flat passenger seat, and split-reclining rear seats. There is a noticeable amount of plastic, however, and the transmission tunnel does impede into the foot wells slightly.

Available features are many, including the Load 'n Go, slide-out cargo floor, which can hold up to 400 lbs., YES Essentials stain-, odour- and static-resistant seat fabric, Chrysler's MyGIG multimedia audio system, and a rear seat DVD player.

Available in two- and four-wheel drive, Nitro shares its standard, 210-hp 3.7-litre V6 engine with the Liberty, retuned for better low-end torque and reduced emissions.

We're big fans of the R/T model, using Chrysler's new 4.0-litre SOHC V6. With 260 hp and unique sport suspension, it's a real hustler for an SUV.

Bad boy looks, hot-blooded R/T model

Steering can betray sporting intentions
