Jeep Patriot
SUV under $45K
Mar 01, 2007
Jeep keeps finding new niches within niches within the greater niche that represents greater SUVdom. It's all about mixing Jeep-ness and car-ness in varying proportions.

Thus, at one extreme we have the Wrangler, which represents truck-like Jeep-ness at its most traditional. At the other extreme we have the new Compass, which is little more than a reskinned Dodge Caliber. And in-between, there is the Liberty.

Well, think of the new Patriot as splitting the difference between Compass and Liberty.

Patriot is also based on the Caliber/Compass platform, but it looks more Jeepish, and is more off-road capable. Jeep claims it to have the best-in-class 4x4 off-road capability in the compact SUV class (when properly equipped).

Patriot will come in three drive configurations: front-wheel drive; Freedom Drive I (full-time, active four-wheel-drive with lock mode); and a Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package (a full-time active 4x4 system with lower gearing that provides true Jeep Trail Rated capability).

A 172-hp, 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine will be standard, with a 5-speed manual or continuously-variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Patriot fits below Compass because of its starting price. It will, be the new gateway to the brand.

Looks like a Jeep should, and trail-rated

Car-based platform gives it away
