Mazda CX-7 GS, GT
SUV under $45K
Mar 01, 2007
How would the RX-8 look and perform, if it were transformed into an SUV? That's the question Mazda answered with the CX-7 -- one of the most sporting SUVs currently on the market.

It shares a lot of its architecture with the Mazda3, but the engine is sourced from the wicked MazdaSpeed6, so witness the turbocharged 2.3-litre DISI (Direct Injection Spark Injection) "four." Because it's coupled to an automatic (6-speed, with manual control), instead of the 'Speed6's 6-speed manual, the engine uses a new turbo, better suited for low-end power. The result is 244 hp at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm.

Power goes to the front wheels, but AWD is available as a $2,000 option, which sends as much as 50 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels on demand. The rear door is a traditional swing-up affair. The rear seats split 60/40 and can be released by levers in the sides of the cargo area, which is decently large and useful. There is no third-row option. If you need one, check out Mazda's CX-9.

On the road the CX-7 is definitely on the firm/sporty side of the ride/handling ledger. Power delivery is also very sports-car like, and might be a bit "turbo-laggy" and abrupt for those accustomed to lazier powerplants. But for those who like their SUVs spicy, this could be your hot tamale.

Edgy power, style and handling

Some turbo lag, firm ride
