You kinda knew in advance what to expect from the next-generation X5, once BMW introduced the X3 in 2004. You see the junior SAV turned out to be roomier -- especially for cargo -- than its larger and pricier sibling.
Say hello, then, to the substantially larger 2007 X5. It's still no monster truck, but 187 mm (7.4 in.) of added body length grows the X5 to about the length of a Chevy TrailBlazer. It's wider and taller, too.
The stretch also generates enough space for BMW to offer an optional third-row seat (a first for any BMW). Forgo the third row, and cargo space behind the second seat expands 25 percent from '06.
The base 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine is BMW's new magnesium-block unit, generating 260 hp versus last year's 225. The uplevel 4.8-litre V8 makes 350 hp, 35 more than last year's 4.4-litre V8. The primary transmission in both cases is a 6-speed automatic -- no more stick-shift for the 3.0-litre.
The x-Drive all-wheel drive system normally apportions the torque 40-percent front, 60-percent rear, but can send up to 100 percent to either end according to need.
The usual slew of active and passive safety technologies is present. For the first time, SAV, BMW's Active Steering technology is optional, packaged with Adaptive Drive. Other options include a rear DVD system, park distance control with a rear-view camera, a navigation system, sport suspension and rear climate-control.
