Choosing an Editors' Choice in this segment is always a totally weird experience. Because if any one of the candidates were sitting in our garage, well, there would be considerably less reason for any of us to go bowling anymore -- boredom would no longer exist as we know it. But even though we love all these sports cars, we love the Porsche Cayman just a leetle bit more.
For one thing, to our eyes at least, it may be one of the most beautiful shapes to be had, at any price.
Porsche created this coupe off the same mid-engine platform that underpins the Boxster. So we're talking near perfect 45:55 weight balance, coupled to a body that is nearly twice as rigid as the roadster. The Boxster is already known as an extremely adept sports machine, so imagine how the Cayman feels on a twisty road?
And now, more of us (well, of you) will be able to enjoy a Cayman of their own, thanks to a new entry-level model positioned below the original S. In place of the S's 295-hp, 3.4-litre boxer six, you get a 245-hp, 2.7-litre. Brakes, wheel and tires are all a little smaller, but the junior "Boxster coupe" is still a blast to drive.
The Cayman's interior carries over nearly unchanged from the Boxster. Not a bad thing considering the handsome design, catcher's mitt seats and rack-and-reach steering.
Under the glass hatch is the finely carpeted cargo area, giving the Cayman surprising usability. Combine that with the front luggage compartment, and the Porsche is an ideal vacation car for the judicious packer.
