Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano
Sport Coupe/Convertible
Mar 01, 2007
Ferrari's replacement for the 575 Maranello is its most powerful 12-cylinder ever. Evolved directly from the Enzo, the 5,999 cc V12 produces 620 European-size hp (maybe 600-610 by SAE ratings). Either way it's claimed to be good for more than 330 km/h.

The V12 is located up front, but behind the axle line for a front-midships designation. Installed in the rear for even weight distribution is a new-generation F1 sequential gearbox. Shift times for the automatically shifted manual 'box have been slashed to just to 0.1 second, which no doubt helps the 599 achieve its claimed 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 sec.

The look of the Pininfarina-penned body speaks for itself, but what's less obvious is that the aerodynamics can generate 160 kg (352 lbs.) of downforce at 300 km/h. Inside, occupants gets lots of support from racing seats with carbon-fibre side bolsters, and an extra grab-handle for the passenger.

Other wonders include magnetorheological variable damping -- actually a system pioneered on the Corvette -- plus a super-smart and driver-adjustable dynamic control system. Oh, and the trunk capacity is a frightfully practical 320 L ...

But what's in the name? 599 is for the engine displacement; GTB is for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, the most famous Ferrari berlinettas, and Fiorano comes from Ferrari's private track.

It actually has a useable trunk ...

You can still get bigger trunks for less money
