There's a new sheriff in town -- the 2007 GMC Sierra. GM worked overtime to make sure its new-generation full-size pickups were on the market before the new Toyota Trundra arrived. We couldn't get our hands on an '07 Tundra in time for Editors' Choice consideration, but we've been all over the new Sierra (and Chevy Silverado) and are blown away on how refinement was raised to such heights at the same time that robustness and utility were raised to new class standards. This is one tough, powerful -- and quiet -- truck. And fuel-efficient too, for a V8 truck at least, by virtue of new V8 engines; several of which feature Active Fuel Management (which cycles the engine between four and eight-cylinder modes). Net result: Our Editors' Choice for Pickups in 2007.
Pretty much anything you care to name on Sierra has been improved. Some highlights: A new, stiffer frame with a hydro-formed front section and a fully-boxed rear section; Choice of two interiors (an upscale one with a centre console, and a "work" one without); Ultimate towing capability increased to 10,500 lbs.; Crew Cabs have rear 60/40 rear seats that can fold and unfold "stadium style" (no lever required). Notable options are roof-mounted head curtain airbags, an Eaton automatic locking rear axle, and a cargo management system.
Consider also the upcoming Sierra Denali, which will feature GM's new 6.2-litre V8 and a 6-speed auto tranny.
Refined, yet rugged, yet powerful, yet fuel efficient
