Since its redesign two years ago, Tacoma isn't really a compact pickup any more -- midsize would be more like it. Styled by Hino, Toyota's heavy-truck division, the Tacoma looks properly tough and rides on a full ladder frame. Available in Access and Double Cab configurations, and with 4x2 or 4x4 drivelines, the Tacoma can be powered by either a 159-hp, 2.7-litre "four," or a 236-hp, 4.0-litre V6. The standard manual transmission is a 6-speed. As is the recipe with Toyota, these trucks are impressively refined, surprisingly economical, and easily set the bar for quality in the segment. Something different is the 4x2 X-Runner sport truck with a close-ratio 6-speed, sport-tuned suspension, and 255/45R18 summer performance tires.
Class-leading refinement, strong V6
No V8, awkward driving position for some
