The midsize Nissan was already the athlete in its peer group, and the all-new '07 is the same only more so. Engine performance is a point of pride with Nissan, and the '07's tweaked carryover units make best-in-class power. Don't be misled by the seemingly unchanged 175 hp of the base 2.5-litre "four" -- the '07's are measured by a tougher test protocol than last year. Likewise, the 3.5-litre V6's 270 hp is a bigger gain over last year's "250" than it appears. Both engines can be had with a short-throw 6-speed manual or a CVT automatic. A rigid new structure, plus all-new front, and improved rear suspensions, make for excellent handling -- albeit at the expense of a firm ride -- and the 3.5's previous unruly torque steer has been almost banished. Built on Nissan's all new "D" platform, the '07 is a tad smaller than its forebear in every exterior dimension except width (+ 8 mm), though trunk and passenger room remain competitive. The comprehensive safety package includes ABS, six airbags, and active head restraints. Standard equipment even on the base 2.5 S includes push-button ignition with Intelligent Key, a trip computer, and auto headlamps. Various option packages are available on the 2.5S. A 3.5 S model adds heated seats and traction control but, curiously, it can't be had with a manual 'box or any options. The 3.5 SE adds more standard features, and available option packages include a navigation system, rear-view camera and satellite radio.
