This is the hot segment for 2006. Everybody is predicting sales of small-to-medium crossovers to flourish over the next while. And why not? These car-based vehicles offer way more room and traction than their sedan counterparts, with little or no fuel penalty. The manufacturers also realize that they can flavour crossovers to suit any personality - boy racer, active-lifestyler, schelper, serious of-roader, mature luxury seeker, etc. But don't forget that there is still a place for non-crossover SUVs, those truck-based rigs that started it all, and are more adept at heavy-lifting chores.
Ford Edge SE, SEL

Honda CR-V LX, EX, EX-L

Trust Honda to buck the current trend for compact cute-utes to get all uppity. So, no, the new third-generation CR-V does not have a third-row seat. Nor can you have it with a V6. – more »

Having slipped the compact Tucson into the bottom end of the crossover-utility vehicle (CUV) market, and grown the second-generation Santa Fe into a seven-seater, you might think that Hyundai's work in the CUV market was ... – more »

Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 GL, 3.3 GL, 3.3 GLS

With the Tucson now covering off the entry-level market, the second-generation (and U.S.-built) Santa Fe moves up in size and market position. There are no 4-cylinder models, just V6s, and a 175-mm longer body ... – more »

Jeep Compass Sport, North, Limited
