Seeing as Saturn was conceived as GM's import-fighter division, you might wonder why GM didn't populate it from the get-go with vehicles derived from its European subsidiary, Opel.

Well, better late than never. The second-generation Vue is a close cousin of Opel's new Antara.

The last Vue was always a bit bigger than its direct compact competitors, so the new one is at no disadvantage being a tad smaller than its predecessor. At 4,576 mm in length, it still out-sizes most rivals that haven't graduated to third-row seating.

The hardest part about buying a Vue might be choosing the model. There will be four trim grades -- XE, XR, Red Line and Green Line -- propelled by four different powertrains (see separate profile for Green Line).

The base XE FWD will get the familiar 2.4-litre, 164-hp Ecotec "four," initially with a 4-speed automatic; a 5-speed manual will arrive later. The XE AWD gets a 3.5-litre, 215-hp OHV V6, while a 3.6-litre, 250-hp DOHC V6 will be standard in the XR and the Red Line. All V6 models will enjoy a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, Saturn promises refined materials and precise fit and finish. The 60/40-split rear-seat backrest folds flat in one motion. A flip-down rear centre armrest with storage is standard.
