Porsche 911 Targa 4, 4S

Published on Mar 01, 2007

Ah, those funny Germans. The literature on this newest Targa model describes the 2+2 as having "Vroom with a view." In all serious though, the Targa model is one of the most unique members of Porsche's 911 family, dating back to 1967.

As in past generations, the '07 Targa 4 and 4S are characterized by a panoramic, entirely glass, roof. Composed of two panels, it extends across the full width and length of the passenger compartment, from the windshield header to the leading edge of the engine cover. The forward panel is technically one huge sunroof, which can be slid open electrically. Both panels are made from a specially formulated glass that absorbs ultraviolet radiation and the sun's heat.

The Targas are the only 911s in the family with hatchback-style access to the storage area behind the coupe's rear seatbacks.

The new Targas also mark the first time Porsche's panoramic roof model has come standard with all-wheel drive and the 911 4's wide-body chassis. AWD is standard whether you choose the standard 325-hp, 6-cylinder, or the more powerful 355-hp 'six,' which can move the Targa from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The AWD system can move between 5 and 40 percent of the engine's power to the front wheels to maintain traction.

Unique open-air motoring and now AWD
