Volvo S80

The S80 comes to us redesigned and in two versions this year: 3.2 and V8 AWD. Although the exterior has a look reminiscent of the previous generation, the car is all-new and introduces a brand new platform. The entry-level version of Volvo's redesigned flagship sedan is powered by a new, normally aspirated 3.2-litre 24-valve inline 6-cylinder, producing 235 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Even though this is the base S80, the list of standard features is long and includes a super-slim center console, premium leather seating surfaces and real wood inlays.
To help packaging, engineers designed the new generation of their inline six-cylinder as a very compact unit. The new engine is just 625 mm long -- about the same length as Volvo's inline 5-cylinder engine.
The engine's compact dimensions have been achieved by locating the ancillaries, such as the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, behind the engine, in the space above the gearbox.
The 2007 S80 V8 AWD is the first Volvo sedan to be powered by a V8. This normally aspirated, 4.4-litre 32-valve V8 engine, developed with the help of Yamaha, offers 311 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque, in a package not that much heavier or bigger than the 6-cylinder engine. Power is transmitted to the four wheels through a 6-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission. A sport package includes the Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept suspension and 18-inch wheels.
