Nissan Sentra 2.0, 2.0S, 2.0SL, SE-R, SE-R Spec V

Published on Mar 01, 2007

If the last Sentra was a wallflower, the styling of the new 2007 model may not do much to change that. It looks a lot like a Saturn ION, to our eyes. What lies under the skin of this sixth-generation Sentra, however, makes it well worth a second look -- especially if you like a car that's quick on its feet. Like its larger Altima sibling, the Sentra has a strong engine, handles like a sports car, and for those so inclined, can be had with a 6-speed manual gearbox that's a shifter's delight. "New" is a much-abused word in the auto industry, but in this case it's entirely justified. The Sentra rides on Nissan-Renault's new "C" platform (it also underpins the Megane in Europe) and has a new 2.0-litre, 140-hp balance-shaft "MR"-series engine tuned for strong low- and mid-range torque. The optional automatic is of the continuously-variable variety (CVT), to the benefit of fuel economy. Much-increased exterior dimensions translate into one of the segment's roomiest cabins -- in fact, the '07 Sentra is roomier inside than the '01 Altima. Trunk volume is only average, but there are compensations -- the seats fold flat, wagon-style, and the pass-through is unusually large. Nissan claims a mountain bike will fit when the back seats are folded. Note, too, the huge (11.8 L) glove box, and a (removable) "false bulkhead" in the trunk that creates a hidden compartment behind the back seat.
