Ford Focus ZX4 S, SE, SES, ST

The second-generation European Focus never crossed the Atlantic, and the aging North American version is no longer the class benchmark. But it's good enough to keep Ford in contention for now, especially since its quality rap has been transformed for the better. As before, Focus is offered in numerous permutations of four body styles and four trim levels. The base engine, a likeable 136-hp, 2.0-litre unit, is found on every sedan model except the sport-flavoured ST, which gets a 151-hp, 2.3-litre. Focus strengths include one of the segment's best blends of ride and handling, and a roomy, comfortable back seat. For '07, there's a rally-inspired GFX wheels-'n-spoilers package, and the available 6-CD/MP3 player comes with steering-wheel controls.
